Turkey Burgers (Monday Meals)

As noted, we do a lot of turkey in this house. Another Real Simple recipe, slightly modified for you. The original is here. I tend to make a lot of stuff just by sight and taste – a dash of this, a little more of that. Those meals are harder to share; maybe I’ll measure one out. But for now, here are some tasty burgers for you. Enjoy!

prep time: 10 minutes, cooking time 20 minutes. I make five burgers (my husband and I tend to eat two each and then we split the last one between J&G)

1 1/4 pounds ground turkey (dark meat or 93 percent lean or less)
3/4 cup grated Trader Joe’s cheddar/gruyere melange
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
kosher salt and black pepper
1/2 medium onion, diced
1/2 teaspoon olive oil
4 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 teaspoon ground cumin
4 hamburger buns
romaine lettuce

I get the pan hot, add the oil and cook the onions and garlic. In a bowl, I mix the turkey, cheese, chili powder, salt and pepper. When the onions and garlic have cooled off a bit, I add them in to the mix. Fashion five little patties – we use a George Forman grill because we live in an apartment in Manhattan but I am sure these would be super tasty on a real grill. While they are cooking I mix the mayonnaise with the cumin, just to give it a little extra something. From there, it’s just a matter of building your burger. For this one we go with Trader Joe’s whole wheat buns – the taste and texture seem to complement the flavors well.
