As I have written about before, we keep our daughter Gluten Free. Many people reply with – no bread? It’s a little more complicated than that. We have come to learn that many packaged foods have gluten (or wheat) added as filler. Hot dogs, bacon, cheese, even yogurt. Our favorite taco seasoning from Trader Joe’s as wheat in it. So we had to prepare our own – luckily it is easy as pie.
1 pound ground turkey
1 medium onion, diced
1 clove garlic clove, minced
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon salt (plus more to taste)
1/4 teaspoon pepper (plus more to taste)
Heat a large skillet on medium heat, add the turkey. Allow some fat to come off the turkey, add in the onion and garlic. Cook until the onion is translucent and the turkey has lost it’s pink – breaking it up as you go along. Once cooked, mix in the dry ingredients. If it all seems a little dry you can add in a little olive oil (1/2 teaspoon to a teaspoon) or even a little water!
Trader Joe’s has gluten free wraps that we use for taco shells – you just need to heat them up a bit and they aren’t bad. But our daughter usually just eats the turkey mixture and is happy as a clam. Along with some cheese, of course.
grated cheese (we use Cabot as it is GF)
It’s not a hard recipe at all. I share it more because, if you are going gluten free (for whatever reason) you must read labels. It would never occur to me that there is gluten in Twizzlers but not M&Ms. That said, once you do read the labels, you will see that you can eat most anything – with a little research.
