My Smoothies are the Worst

I love the idea of smoothies.  Always have – it’s an easy way to get your nutrition.  But I have NEVER been able to make one.  I try.  But I either break the blender (no joke, I have broken two NutriBullets) or I make a smoothie that consists of nothing but milk and blueberries.  And while it tastes good, am I really gaining anything from it?  I’m not fulfilling any of my nutritional needs.  Buying pre-made smoothies (in NYC especially) is an expensive prospect.  I know my bases are covered but at $6-$10 per drink, it’s untenable.

So last month, I found Shakeology.*  I have tried protein shakes before and even attempted to drink SlimFast.  I write “attempted” because it is sludge.  I will NOT provide a hyperlink to their site as it is vile and I won’t be responsible for anyone trying the stuff.  In college, I worked at a juice bar that sold a powdered drink that was supposed to cover all my nutritional needs for the day – all it did was give me nightmares.  Which, apparently, were a well known side-effect.  No thanks!

A month in to drinking Shakeology I can honestly say that I love the stuff.  It contains over 70 ingredients, so 68 more than my blueberry/milk concoction.   I don’t know enough about nutrition to go in to every detail but did find a blogger who did an amazing four-part review – which you can delve in to here.  On my second day, I asked my coach (Shakeology is part of Beachbody) if the mix had any stimulants in it because I was so fired up.  Turns out my body just wasn’t used to ingesting so many nutrients at once.  The chocolate shake has some caffeine in it but that has just reduced my coffee cravings so I’m fine with it.  My husband and I are trying different recipes but so far his favorite is the Orange Cream (1/2 cup orange juice, 1/2 cup water, one packet vanilla Shakeology).  While mine is basically a doughnut in a glass (1 tbsp almond butter, 1 cup milk, 1 tsp maple syrup – Maple Buttercup).

And I’m sticking to the suggested recipes.  The other day I went to the grocery store and THOUGHT I had purchased some frozen cherries.  When I got home, I found that they were in fact frozen cranberries.  Oops.  But I thought – how bad can it be?  I mixed a half cup with my chocolate Shakeology.  Nope.  Nope, nope, nope!  I’ll make some cookies with the cranberries.

Have you ever tried Shakeology or any other shakes?  Would love to hear about it in the comments below.

*Full disclosure – if you decide to use that link to purchase Shakeology, I will get a commission.  I have hesitated to write about this because I don’t want to seem pushy or salesly.  The ONLY reason I am finally writing about this is that I really love the product.  And it has a 100% money back guarantee.

  1. I drink Shakeology for the same reason. Making my own is complicated, although this summer I want to try some new recipes for that too. After a few months though I got kind of sick of it. So I have put my shipment on hold since I have 3 bags in my cupboard. A big heat wave is coming in so I will probably be craving smoothies and shakes again.

      1. I always bought the vegan chocolate because I try to limit dairy. I tried a few recipes, but not that many. Mostly with almond milk, banana, coffee, or PB2, not all at the same time of course. I tried a few of the cooking recipes as well. I think I mostly just got tired of a shake for breakfast. Love the taste though:)

    1. I would be more than happy to send you a sample of the chocolate and vanilla. I’ve ordered but don’t yet have strawberry or I would share that with you as well.
